Cardiac Monitor and Telemetry Technician monitor patient's heart rhythms using telemetry equipment and therefore must have knowledge of normal rhythm versus the various types of abnormal rhythms and should also be able to interpret and measure rhythm strips by rate and EKG intervals, records physiological measurements, identify cardiac arrhythmias, report any changes from the baseline, assist and perform application of EKGs, maintain EKG equipment as required, they are also responsible for documenting the heart rate and rhythm. Cardiac Monitor Technicians and Telemetry Technicians must also have the knowledge of preparing the patient for the procedure and applying EKG electrodes for various types of EKGs. To measure the patient's heart rhythm, the cardiac monitor and telemetry technician use calipers on the graphic tape readouts.
They have direct interaction with the patients and therefore must understand the concept of infection control, standard precautions, communication, basic medical terminologies, legal issues, patient privacy. They must also be able to explain the procedure to the patient.
