Posting Summary
The New Ark Freedom School (NAFS) aims to boost student motivations to read, generate more positive attitudes toward learning, increase self-esteem and connect the needs of children and families to the resources of their communities. A product of the Civil Rights Movement and 1964 Freedom Summer, NAFS serves 3rd - 8th grade families at Thirteenth Avenue Elementary School, over six weeks, using the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School model. Education Specialist is responsible for supporting lesson plan development, classroom management, and parent engagement. As Site Testing Manager, the candidate is responsible for the assessment of children, parents, and Servant Leaders at the New Ark Freedom School program site.
The Educational Specialist will administer individual reading assessments, collect surveys, and submit all required data and forms to the Children's Defense Fund. The Educational Specialist is responsible and best qualified to ensure the objectivities and credibility of the CDF Freedom Schools National Assessment initiative. Graduate/post graduate students majoring in education/psychology, current/retired schoolteachers, and local University professors encouraged.
Position Expectations
  • Complete mandatory virtual and in-person training session.
  • Provide active and direct supervision to students, as needed, ensuring all students are learning in a safe and productive environment
  • Employ positive youth development and engagement strategies to connect with youth and foster positive behavior.
  • Develop interventions to support student reading growth and skill development.
  • Administer individual reading tests for the first and the last weeks of the CDF Freedom Schools program.
  • Administer and collect surveys from children, parents and Servant Leader.
    Submit assessments, surveys, and other required material to the Children'sDefense Fund in a timely manner.
  • Maintain communication with Site Coordinators/Project Directors at the program site where the National Assessment is administered.
  • Lead parent engagement activities.
  • Evaluate and document students' progress.

This project is funded Under Title IV, Part B of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) grant funds through a grant agreement with the New Jersey Department of Education.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor Degree in teaching or relevant field.
  • Exhibit positive behavior and attitude. Model a mature and professional demeanor. Possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong appreciation and understanding of individual cultural history and the willingness to be open and respectful of other cultures.
  • Attention to detail and data collection processes
  • In-depth knowledge of evidence based teaching strategies and legal educational procedures.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Well-organized with excellent leadership abilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills
