Job Description:

50% Assisting the Practicum Office, Assistant Dean, Retention Coordinator, Academic Advisors, and Program Directors to provide support and resources for students who have challenges with academic, physical and mental health, wellness, conduct, safety or their general welfare or may be at risk of disruption if they are otherwise not provided for. This position promotes student retention and success by:

  • Collaborating with staff, community providers, and other campus partners (including KU Student Support and Case Management) in the planning, implementation, and coordination of student support.

  • Referring students to the correct KU office, including but not limited to Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Financial Aid & Scholarships, KU Emergency Aid, and University Academic Support Centers.

  • Assisting students in the identification and utilization of community resources and services in Lawrence as well as the KC metro area and partner-sites.

  • Understanding differences in eligibility for services/support for students enrolled through partner sites, communicating this effectively to students, and helping keep the School website updated with relevant information and links.

  • Maintaining a system for following up with students who have been referred to campus or community resources and ensuring follow through with recommendations.

  • Adhering to School and university and state and federal policies and procedures as well as professional ethical standards in their carrying out of these activities.

25% The Student Support Coordinator will stay abreast of School, university, and community activities and initiatives that can be bought to bear in their own support services for students. This includes:

  • Participating in various campus and community programs, trainings, and initiatives on issues related to student wellness and development.

  • Working with the Assistant Dean to create new programming aimed at partnering with parents/families to support student success.

  • Developing and implementing student programming and resources for personal growth and health and wellness; to include awareness-raising among faculty and staff of these resources and programming.

  • Adhering to School and university and state and federal policies and procedures as well as professional ethical standards in their carrying out of these activities.

10% The Student Support Coordinator will complete documentation and maintain records of student contacts and supports provided in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA standards as well as creating policies and procedures for the position.

10% Attend and participate in trainings and staff development and serve on School and KU committees.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in social work from an accredited college/university

  2. Demonstrated ability to consider and address the needs and concerns of persons from a wide range of backgrounds, as evidenced through application materials and interview.

  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced through application materials and interview. This includes the ability to speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.

  4. Minimum one year of experience providing student support or adult case management services.

Position Overview:

The School of Social Welfare is seeking a professional, knowledgeable, and reliable support coordinator for students enrolled in the School of Social Welfare at KU. The support coordinator promotes student wellbeing, retention, and success by collaborating with students, staff, community providers, and other campus partners in planning, designing, implementing and coordinating student support. This full-time position assists the Practicum Office, the Assistant Dean, Retention Coordinator, Academic Advisors, and Program Directors with coordinating processes for addressing the needs of students who have challenges with academic, physical and mental health, wellness, conduct, safety or their general welfare through providing referral and follow-up services. The Student Support Coordinator will meet with students and help facilitate their access to and utilization of university and/or community resources. The Student Support Coordinator is expected to work a flexible schedule, in-person and online, to accommodate the various needs of the student body they serve, which may include some evening and weekend hours. This position also requires operation of a motor vehicle as a part of the job duties.

In addition to daily supervision provided by the Assistant Dean, this position will receive regular social work supervision from a licensed master social worker (LMSW) to support professional development.

This position requires a compassionate, self-motivated, self-directed, and creative individual with strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills accompanied by exceptional organizational skills and proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications. The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic, as well as a passion for helping students, a commitment to service excellence, and student success. The successful candidate must maintain appropriate ethical and professional conduct while working with a wide range of students, staff, and faculty. Further, it is expected the employee have the ability to create a welcoming and safe environment for students through courteous, informed, accessible, and professional engagement. Adherence to School, university, state and federal regulations and policy, including the maintaining strict confidentiality, privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information is also expected.
