Description/Job Summary

Upward Bound Math and Science Program (UBMS) is a federally funded grant program that serves first-generation,under served high school students. This pre-college program was developed to strengthen the math and science skills of high-school students and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). As a Residential Tutor Counselor, you'll provide tutorial support, lead icebreaker activities, and nurture a sense of community among participants. Your role extends to program documentation and evaluation, pivotal in creating a supportive environment. You'll serve as a mentor, ensure safety standards, and organize activities to enhance the college experience for students.

Responsibilities/Duties

Essential Responsibilities:

The UBMS Tutor Counselor is committed to supporting and empowering students as they navigate the transition from high school to the postsecondary environment, addressing both academic success and social-emotional expectations.

The Upward Bound Math and Science Tutor Counselor is responsible for:

  • Under the guidance of the Residential Coordinator and Program Director, offer support in managing a caseload of high school students within a six-week summer pre-college program.

  • Provide tutoring to high school students in core subjects, i.e. English, Science and Mathematics.

  • A capacity to engage with students both in group settings and one-on-one, offering enriching activities that foster academic, emotional, and social development.

  • Assist Residential Coordinator with the organization of summer residence student programming.

  • Chaperone and supervise students for on and off campus activities.

  • Fulfilling duties throughout the day, night, and overnight shifts, rotating as part of a larger team to ensure comprehensive support to students.

  • Developing intervention plans for students with academic and/or social difficulties.

  • Communicate regularly with students, resident staff, Teachers, Program staff and parents collaboratively to help improve college-readiness outcomes.

  • Maintaining documentation of support services to ensure summer program compliance.

  • Participate in Summer Trainings and meetings to further professional development.

  • Enforce UBMS, College, State and federal rules and regulations for youth residential programs.

* This is a full-time 6-week summer position only**

Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least a junior in college with tutoring and/or mentoring experience with high school students.

  • Must have high academic competency in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in higher education, education, psychology, or related field of study.

  • Three years of experience providing tutoring or mentorship services to high school students.

  • Previous experience working other Federal TRIO Grant programs.
