Tankerman refers to several endorsements or qualified ratings to Merchant Marine Documents (MMD). All Tankerman endorsements require qualifying experience, training in firefighting and cargo (dangerous liquids or liquefied gasses), and passing an exam. Endorsements include Tankerman - Person-In-Charge (Tankerman PIC), Tankerman-Engineer, Tankerman Assistant, and Tankerman - PIC (Barge). Tankerman endorsements are valid for the duration of the MMD, which is issued for 5 years. Renewal of certification requires meeting all the requirements to renew the MMD and either have recent qualifying experience or training.
