To obtain a United States Coast Guard license as a Third Mate - Upper Level requires 1080 days service in the deck department of ocean steam or motor vessels with 6 months as Able Seaman (AB); or graduate from an approved marine academy; or completion of an approved 3 year apprentice mate training program; or 360 days as Master on ocean steam or motor vessels greater than 200 GT while licensed as a Master 1600 Gross Tons. Other requirements include passing a written exam, a physical exam, and completion of a first aid course and a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course within the past 12 months.
