Experience Requirement: Barber and Cosmetology Instructor exam candidates must: (1) Complete the 12th grade or an accredited senior high school course of study in a California public school or its equivalent; (2) Hold a valid license to practice barbering or cosmetology in California; and, (3) Meet one of the following: (a) Completed a cosmetology or barbering instructor training course in an approved school by the board or equivalent training in an approved school in another state; (b) Completed 10 months of practice as a teacher assistant or teacher aide in a school approved by the board; or (c) Practiced cosmetology or barbering in a licensed establishment in California or its equivalent in another state for one year. Practice out-of-state must be within three years of your California application.
