DESCRIPTION OF OCCUPATION: A Clinical Laboratory Cytotechnologist is a trained technologist who examines human cell samples to detect early signs of cancer and other diseases. They examine cell samples for abnormal color, shape, and size and work with pathologists to form a diagnosis. REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSING: Education and Experience requirements: 1) Bachelor's degree in cytotechnology; OR 2) Bachelor's degree in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences PLUS completion of accredited training program in cytotechnology; OR 3) Before 9/1/92: Complete 2 academic years of study in an accredited college or university with at least 12 semester hours on courses pertinent to the medical sciences PLUS 1 year of training in an approved school of cytotechnology or 6 months training in an approved school or cytotechnology and 6 months full-time experience in cytotechnology in a lab acceptable to the Department; OR 4) Before 9/1/94: Complete high school PLUS 6 months training in cytotechnology in a lab directed by a board certified pathologist, 2 years of full-time experience within the past 5 years in cytotechnology*. *This applies only to individuals who completed their training prior to 1/1/69. EXAMINATIONS: Pass a written national certification exam. APPLICATION AND FEES: $25 for application fee, $40 for license, $30 for renewal every 2 years.
