GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Investigates all deaths in the Commonwealth of Kentucky occurring under any unusual circumstances as defined in the Kentucky Revised Statutes. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Every Coroner must take and successfully complete a forty (40) hour basic training course within one (1) year of taking office for certification by the Kentucky Justice Cabinet. EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS Applicant must submit Application for Training form to the Kentucky Justice Cabinet, Department of Criminal Justice Training, for admittance to a Coroner's Training Course. At the conclusion of each course, a written examination must be taken and passed for certification. A score of at least 70% is required for certification. There is no examination fee. Reexamination is given, within thirty (30) days, to anyone who fails to make 70% on the first examination. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION Applicant must be 24 years of age, a resident of Kentucky for at least two (2) years, and at least one (1) year residency in the County in which he/she is a candidate. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Every Coroner must take and successfully complete an eighteen (18) hour in-service course annually after completion of the Coroner's basic course for certification by the Kentucky Justice Cabinet. SPECIAL COMMENTS or CONDITIONS Certification standards and review for certification are done by the Medical Examiner Advisory Commission and the Board of Directors of the Kentucky State Coroner's Association.
