Paramedic Emergency Medical Technician - Must be state certified and a Nationally Registered EMT-Basic EMT-Intermediate or receive special exemption as granted by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS. - Must demonstrate a 12th grade reading level and 10th grade math level for a standardized proficiency exam approved by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS. - Must provide sponsoring agency with a statement (less than 6 months old) from physician attesting the physicalability of a student to perform duties of an EMT. - Must not be a convicted felon unless reviewed by the National Registry, the Louisiana Bureau of EMS, and the EMS Certification Commission. Basic Emergency Medical Technician - Must successfully complete a Louisiana Bureau of EMS approved training program based on the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician-Basic and must have received Louisiana State Certification and National Registry (NR) registration. - Must be 17 years of age in order to enter the program, but 18 years old prior to taking the NR exam. - Must have a high school diploma or GED or must be a state certified First Responder prior to taking the course and must be enrolled in good standing with their high school. Must demonstrate an eighth grade reading level for a standardized proficiency exam approved by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS, and must provide sponsoring agency with a statement (less than 6 months old) from student’s physician attesting to: Ø Physical ability of student to perform duties of EMT. Ø Current immunization status as recommended by the Office of Public Health. Ø Freedom from communicable disease. - All EMT-Basic training must be received from a training site approved by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS and meeting or exceeding the current DOT National Standard Curricula. - Must take a written and practical exam. Intermediate Emergency Medical Technician - Must have completed a Louisiana Bureau of EMS approved training program based on the 1984 United States Department of Transportation curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician, and received the Louisiana State Certification and National Registry Certification, and have a 10th grade reading level approved by the Bureau of EMS. Must be a State Certified EMT-Basic and a National Registered EMT Basic or have received special exemption as granted by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS. - Must provide sponsoring agency with statement (less than 6 months old) from physician attesting to physical ability of student to perform duties of EMS; current immunization status as recommended to the Office of Public Health; and freedom from communicable disease. - Must not have criminal felony record of conviction, or must have had their conviction reviewed by the National Registry, the Louisiana Bureau of EMS and the EMS Certification Commission. - Prospective student may not be enrolled in any EMT training program if student has been dismissed from any other EMS training program for reasons other than academic failure within 2 years prior to start of current program. - All EMT-Intermediate training must be received from a training site approved by the Louisiana Bureau of EMS and meeting or exceeding the 1984 DOT National Standard Curriculum. Students must attend 90 percent of the total hours of training.
