If they do not provide a Certified Landscape Specialist, they will not be authorized to perform the work.

MnDOT offers Landscape Project Installation, Inspection, and Administration training classes yearly in January &/or February. This training is a one day course held at a MnDOT facility. It is aimed at MnDOT inspectors who are inspecting landscaping on projects and contractors and subcontractors who are installing the landscaping. The course includes an online exam. Completion of the exam and a passing score certifies the attendee as a Certified Landscape Specialist. The certification is valid for 3 years.

Becoming re-certified requires one to attend the class again and pass the exam, or take an online re-certification class and exam. Re-certification is also valid for 3 years.

According to MnDOT Spec 2571.3, (Construction Requirements) the contractor will "Provide a Landscape Specialist, certified by the Department, to perform or supervise plant installation and establishment work".
