<p>Architects provide professional services or creative work to plan and design structures and buildings, applying knowledge of design, construction procedures, zoning and building codes, and building materials to safeguard the public from hazards such as fire, panic, structural failure, and unsanitary conditions. Consult with clients to determine functional and spatial requirements along with aesthetic considerations. Plan layout of project, prepare scale drawings and contact documents for building contractors. Represent client in obtaining bids and awarding construction contracts. May direct activities of workers preparing drawings and specification documents.</p> <p><strong>Legislation:</strong> NH RSA 310-A:37; Administrative Rules Chapter Arch 100-500</p> <p><strong>Licensure Requirements:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Be at least 21 years of age and have graduated from an approved high school or its equivalent</li> <li>Possess one of the following combinations of professional education and experience:</li> <ol> <li>A National Architectural Accrediting Board or Canadian Architectural Certification Board accredited professional degree in Architecture and at least three years of architectural experience in accordance with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Handbook for Interns and Architects July 2015 edition; or</li> <li>A four-year pre-professional degree in architecture and at least seven years of architectural experience in accordance with the NCARB Handbook for Interns and Architects July 2015 edition; or</li> <li>If the candidate has no degree, they must have at least 13 years of architectural experience in accordance with the NCARB Handbook for Interns and Architects July 2015 edition</li> </ol> <li>Completion of the Intern Development Program through the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB)</li> <li>Each applicant must provide no fewer than five references from unrelated individuals, with at least three being licensed architects having detailed knowledge of the applicant's architectural experience</li> </ul> <p><strong>Examination:</strong> Candidates must successfully pass the nine-part National Council of Examiners architectural registration examination</p> <p><strong>Continuing Education:</strong> A total of 12 units of continuing education is required each year, consisting of eight units in the area of health, safety, and welfare, and four units in sustainable design (Note: Administrative Rules are currently under review.)</p> <p><strong>Fees:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Application: $150</li> <li>Certificate of licensure: $50</li> <li>Verification of licensure: $25</li> <li>Biennial Renewal: $150</li> <li>NCARB council record application: $250</li> <li>State-to-state reciprocity: $325</li> <li>Certificate of licensure replacement fee: $30</li> </ul> <p><strong>Reciprocity:</strong> Permitted if the other state's licensing requirements are substantially equivalent to or higher than those of New Hampshire</p> <p>revised Jan 2018</p>
