HAIR BRAIDER: A person that uses techniques that result in tension on hair strands, such as twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking, or braiding of the hair, by hand or mechanical appliances for compensation, without cutting, coloring, relaxing, removing, chemically treating, or using other preparations to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair.<br><br>REQUIREMENTS: Effective July 1, 2019, hair braiders are exempt from licensure (Title 62, Chapter 4) provided that the general requirements and educational requirements are met including: Using only disposable or properly sanitized instruments. Workers must be at least 14 years of age, according to state labor law. Post a notice that the hair braider is not licensed. A person providing hair braiding services pursuant to this section shall not refer to themselves as a licensed natural hair stylist unless the person otherwise meets the requirements under TCA§ 62-4-ll0(f).<br><br> EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Obtain 16 hours of training in health and hygiene in-person or online. <br><br> RENEWAL: Register biennially and pay a $30 registration fee online.
